Headline + video says it all. I had forgotten about ‘time outs.’ And how about that sweet jam, “Friends Forever?”

Oh, doctor

February 28, 2009 · 2 Comments

Dan, teaching Megan how to do heel and toe turns on the snowboard: You’re not trying! You’re being a chicken. You need to really wipe out. Then I’ll know you’re trying.

[Megan makes a few successful turns and then wipes out hard. Cries.]

Medic: Are you OK? Need a lift?

Dan: Nah, she’s fine. [Medic drives away. Turns to Megan.] Do you need a doctor?

[Megan cries.]

Dan: Guess I shouldn’t have told you to wipe out. But good job!

The truth is, I thought I’d be a lot better at this. And I suppose I have the technical stuff down. But breaking your bum really takes a toll on the ‘ol confidence. Forget pride; I lost that taking a dive off the ski lift.

Nonetheless, and you wouldn’t have been able to tell 20 minutes ago, but this is the best vacation I’ve ever taken. And I still can’t forsee going back to skis. But damn, skiing came easier..

According to my calculations, I burned nearly 1,700 calories yesterday. I need to man up and take a few more runs in order to earn the irish car bomb that’s waiting for me in two hours. Oh, doctor.

The Pantsless Skier

January 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

You should know…I’ve been having a small laugh about this for days. I’m sure I’m creating loads of bad karma for our upcoming trip to Steamboat, but I can’t help myself. Poor guy.

Vampire Weekend @ 9:30

December 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last night, D and I joined a couple friends at the 9:30 Club to see Vampire Weekend. Admittedly, I wasn’t too excited about going on a school night, but it was well worth it. As I was standing there, I kept thinking, “Man, I hope the DCist or somebody types up a good review of this show, because this is awesome.”

Sure enough, the DCist posted their review, along with some photos. In fact, the photos were great for me, since the show was sold out and we got stuck standing at the far back.

The review is short, but so was the show. Note the Fleetwood Mac cover! (I’m down with the Fleet.) However my favorites were probably “M-79″ and “Walcott.”

The DC stop signals the end of VW’s tour, but if they make good on their promise to tour again in 2009, you better hop to.

Introducing the Awkward Turkey (and more)

November 12, 2008 · 2 Comments

Let it be known that I’m perfectly content with the awkward turtle. However, this week I learned about the awkward turkey, which led me to all of these other awkward signs.

Which is your fave?

Whose House?

November 5, 2008 · 6 Comments

A couple of things:

1. Last night was damn incredible.

2. John McCain’s concession speech was fantastic. (And if he had been that candidate throughout the campaign, the election may have turned out differently.)

3. Obama’s acceptance speech was damn incredible.

4. I hope I never see Sarah Palin again.

As you might expect, there was euphoric pandemonium in DC last night.  (Here’s a snapshot; that first video was shot a few blocks away from my apartment.) In fact, we slept in D’s living room to try and shut out some of the noise.

I would still describe the vibe as electrifying and dream-like. As I walked past the rows of newspaper stands this morning I almost felt like I was dreaming, or like I was in some sort of weird Back to the Future scenario, where I had inadvertently done something in the future to cause an unlikely outcome for the present.**

Stupidly, I never really thought about how it would feel to live in DC  during an election year. Some of you have emailed me asking about it, and strangely, D sort of answered that question on our way home from an election party:

“This morning I finally figured out what I would tell people when they ask me what it was like to live in DC. I’ll tell them that it’s sort of like living in the movie Election. Pretty much everyone is like Tracey Flick; a bunch of nerds who desperately wanted to win student council.”

I would post that without comment, except that I watched a person cry every time Barack won a state last night, and I found it funny yet fascinating: I’m just not wired that way.

Nonetheless, I’m probably going to take a personal day on Inauguration Day to watch the parade and a little history in the making.

**This makes no sense to you unless you’re an ardent BtF fan.

Hallow’s Eve

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

See, black cats aren’t so scary. :)

So, let’s get on with it—what are your costumes this year? And which of you are wearing Halloween garb to the office today? (Not me. Though I do happen to be wearing all black.)

Larry David: Waiting for November 4th

October 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The one concession I’ve made to maintain some form of sanity is that I’ve taken to censoring my news, just like the old Soviet Union. The citizenry (me) only gets to read and listen to what I deem appropriate for its health and well-being. Sure, there are times when the system breaks down. Michele Bachmann got through my radar this week, right before bedtime. That’s not supposed to happen. That was a lapse in security, and I’ve had to make some adjustments.

Incidentally, this is exactly how I feel about the Huffington Post (I quit reading it for politics)—where I happened upon Larry David’s election neurosis.

But I guess some things happen for reason. Because I’ll be galdamned if it isn’t one of the funniest things I’ve read this week. Check it out.

Urban Redemption

October 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Once in a great while, the city can get me down. The noise at all hours, the strung out guy cornering me outside the apartment, the random blockades that make it impossible to get within six blocks of your destination, the newbie in the metro that doesn’t wait for people to step off the train car before rushing on…

But this past Sunday, the city redeemed itself. We walked to church, strolled through the Farmer’s Market, enjoyed a tasty brunch, and on our walk home, encountered this:

I took this with my phone, so it might be a little fuzzy. But what we’ve got here is a DC tour bus (my nemesis), which has run into these poor window washers.

The windshield on the bus’ upper deck was smashed and the poor window washers? Irate. We were in stitches when, from across the street, we heard one of the window washers yell down to the driver:

“If you don’t back up that godd@mned bus…”

And as the threats began, the traffic backed up and the sirens came a whirring. Funny the ways in which the city redeems itself.

Poll: Palin as Prez

October 15, 2008 · 10 Comments

Palin as President: A nifty little flash site, updated every day through November 4. Check it out and tell me what your favorite site feature is—mine keeps changing.

(Btw, I’m using WordPress’ new polling feature, which doesn’t appear to be working at the moment. Stand by.)
